Direct Mail, Digital Ads
From Rationing to Ravishing: The Transformation of Women’s Clothing in the 1940s and 1950s was an exhibit held at the Museum of Vancouver. The focus of the exhibit was to showcase haute couture and Vancouver-made clothing and accessories that reflect how WWII impacted society. Highlights included Boeing Vancouver overalls and couture pieces from designers Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga.
For this project, a direct mail piece and digital social media ads were created, inspired by the beautiful garments showcased in the exhibit. A series of collectable postcards serve as the direct mail piece and for the online component, Instagram stories were created.
Photographs were taken at the exhibit and then transformed to give an illustration, hand-drawn look to the images.
The concept behind the project was to highlight the beauty and artistry of the clothing designs while creating an effective marketing piece that would get noticed by the audience – reimagining each piece of clothing as a fashion illustration – as they would have started out as before becoming the classic garments and silhouettes of their time.
The objective was to create awareness and drive attendance for the exhibit. The challenge was to reimagine an advertising campaign for an existing museum exhibition. This was achieved by using strong, eye-catching images to catch the attention of fashion lovers, incorporating beautiful designer pieces and classic profiles of the 1940s and 1950s such as Dior’s New Look which has become the defining silhouette of women’s fashion in the 1950s.
